Obituary of James Shuford
James William "Jim" Shuford of Clarksdale, MS, passed away on April 24, 2018. Jim was born on June 26, 1933 to Era and Julius Blair Shuford in Pine Bluff, AR. During his teenage years, he worked with his father building levees and roads while living in levee camp tents in Mississippi and Arkansas. In January 1951, Jim was a senior in high school when he joined the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. After graduating from Hope High School, he married Dot, his wife of 55 years. He continued to work with his father and then worked at Wilson Case Tractor Co. in Clarksdale, MS. He graduated from Delta State University with a degree in Biology and Chemistry and then continued his education in Entomology at Mississippi State University. Jim built his cotton consulting business and was an Entomologist for 47 years before retiring in 2007. In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending many weekends with his family at Desoto Lake.
Jim is preceded in death by his wife Dora Mae "Dot". He is survived by his son Justin Shuford of Lyon, Ms., his daughter and son-in-law Leslie and Jay Jacks, grandsons Merritt Jacks and Tyler Jacks, all of Memphis, TN, and his brother Joe Shuford of Cordova, TN.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at the Methodist Hospice Residence who provided care and support for Jim during his illness. Visitation will be held May 18, 2018, from 1:00-2:00 at Meredith-Nowell Funeral Home in Clarksdale, MS followed by a memorial service at 2:00 at Meredith-Nowell Chapel in Clarksdale, MS. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Methodist Hospice Residence in Memphis, TN or First United Methodist Church in Clarksdale, MS.
