Obituary of Lillian Carson
Lillian Graham Carson, 90, a native of Marks, Mississippi, died at her home Monday, July 3rd, 2017. Mrs. Carson was born in Memphis, TN, March 13, 1927. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Robert Alexander Carson, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Seward Mills of Glendora, MS, and Mr. Edgar Dewitt Graham; her brothers Edgar Dewitt Graham Jr. of Sumner, MS, and Micajah Sturdivant Mills of Memphis, TN, and her granddaughter, Lillian Graham Carson of Marks, MS.
Lil, as she was known by her friends, was educated in the public schools of Glendora and Clarksdale, MS. She also attended Stephens School and College in Columbia, MO, where she majored in Aviation obtaining her commercial pilot license. Lil and Bob were married in 1947 and lived in Davidson, NC, where Bob completed his education. They then lived in Charlotte, NC, until moving back to Mississippi in February 1951 where they farmed and lived on Buckskin Plantation. Lil was very active in many community and Delta wide activities. She was one of the founding members of the Quitman County Educational Foundation, Delta Academy, and instrumental in organizing the Delta Academy Mothers Club, serving as president. She served on the County Library Board of Trustees and later served as Chairperson of the Marks Quitman County Library Board of Trustees until her death. She was a member of the Marks Garden Club for many years. Lil had the honor of being selected as one of Delta Council's Good Middling Ladies. She was a member of the Marks Presbyterian Church for 66 years and helped establish the Church Founders Garden. Lil enjoyed cooking, gardening, playing mahjong and traveling, especially spending her summers in Destin, FL, and the North Carolina mountains. She will be remembered as a devoted wife and one who served her family, her community and friends.
Lil is survived by her son, Robert Alexander Carson Jr., wife Sally, of Marks, and two daughters, Donna Buford Carson of Oxford, MS, and Lillian Graham Carson of Marks; grandchildren, Fowler Carson Staines, husband Billy, of Oxford, and Robert Alexander Carson III of Marks; great grandchildren, Sally Graham Staines and William Miles Staines of Oxford.
Services for Mrs. Carson will be held at Marks Presbyterian Church on Thursday, July 6th, 2017, at 2:00 pm, with burial in Marks Cemetery following the service. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 1:00 pm at the church.
