Obituary of Jimmy Gee

Jimmy Gee, 81, of Sumner, Mississippi, passed away on Dec 27, 2020. Due to the pandemic, there will be a memorial service held at a later date. Meredith-Nowell Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. He was born on September 8, 1939 in New York City at the tail end of the Great Depression. He moved to Sumner at a very young age and grew up there. He worked in his father's grocery store, The Bing Company in downtown Sumner, where he learned the values of frugality and hard work. Jimmy graduated from West Tallahatchie High School and went on to serve in the Mississippi National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserves as a radio/telephone operator and bulldozer driver. He also attended Mississippi State University for two years, but left to take over the family grocery store in Sumner. On August 16, 1964, he married Louise Lee and they then ran the family grocery store together. In the late 1970's, he moved the business to Highway 49 and renamed it, Gee's Groceries, where he continued to provide a valued resource for the community until retiring in 2004. He loved to tinker with motors of all sizes. His children have memories of car transmissions and carburetor parts strewn across the floor. He was very mechanically inclined and even built a hand-made telegraph to show his children how it worked. He enjoyed cooking and often used vegetables from his garden for his dishes. He was a quiet and loving partner to his wife Louise, as well as a father to their two sons Jay (Nita) Gee of Atlanta, GA, Corey (Elizabeth) Gee of Sumner, MS; sister Lay Bing of Clarksdale, MS; 5 grandchildren Saylor Gee, Hunter Gee, Laura Melton, Chelsea Melton, Scott Melton; 1 great grandchild Ryker Gee; many nieces and nephews. Mr. Gee is preceded in death by his parents Edward and Fui Kun Gee; brothers Tommy Gee, Peter Chu; sister Edna Jue. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be sent to First Baptist Church, 400 Cassidy Street, Sumner, MS 38957 or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 South Danny Thomas Blvd, Memphis, TN 38105.»(Do not delete this line.
