Obituary of Charles Alfred Rutledge

Charles Alfred Rutledge, 89, of Clarksdale, Mississippi, passed away in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family on April 6, 2019.

Charles was a proud graduate of Vanderbilt University, and remained a loyal fan of the Vanderbilt Commodores through thick and thin (… mostly thin). After a brief stint as a chemist for Phillips Oil Co. in Houston and Borger, Texas, he returned to Clarksdale and joined his father, T. O. Rutledge, as the Gulf Oil, and later, Shell Oil distributor. Charles loved the great outdoors, and shared his passion for hunting, fishing, and camping with his family and many friends. A highly skilled fisherman, Charles landed the catch of his life when he married Joy Caudle of Gadsden, Alabama. Charles and Joy could often be found with family and friends at Burkes Hunting Club at their cabin, Possumtrot, or traveling the West in their camper, camping, hiking, flyfishing, and generally enjoying the beauty of the Rocky Mountains.

Charles will long be remembered for his fine sense of humor and his wonderful stories of his youth in the Mississippi Delta. We will miss his warm smile and the twinkle in his eye.

Charles is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joy; daughter, Anne; son, Chuck, and granddaughter, Laura Rutledge, along with nephews, David and Carter Bush, and Jeff, Tim, Eric, and William Caudle. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Helen Rutledge, and his sister, Mary Helen Bush.

A Celebration of Charles' life will be held at First United Methodist Church on Wednesday, April 10, at 1:30 PM, followed by Visitation, also at the Church. Meredith-Nowell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
