Gann, Robert Brooks

Robert Brooks Gann, "Bob", 81, of Tunica, Mississippi, passed away Friday, October 19, 2018, at DeSoto Baptist Hospital with his wife at his side.
Bob was born May 6, 1937 in Strayhorn, Mississippi to Harry Lee and Mary Lillian Gann (nee Floyd). His family moved to Tunica, MS in 1938 and he attended elementary through high school there. He graduated from Tunica County High School in 1955. After graduation he enlisted in the US Navy and attended Boot Camp and Naval Electronics School in Great Lakes, Illinois. In 1956 he was selected to attend a Prep School in Bainbridge, Maryland to prepare for entry into college. Bob enrolled in the University of Mississippi on a Naval ROTC scholarship in September, 1956. He graduated from Ole Miss in 1960 with a BBA in Accounting and a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps.
On May 28, 1960, he married the love of his life, Kathleen Funk, of Clarksdale, MS. They embarked on a life in the military that took them around the world with the family living in Kenitra, Morocco and many different places in the United States. He also served in Vietnam, returning in 1967, and later in Okinawa, Japan in 1973/1974. They had two girls, Mary Elizabeth (Lisa) and Kristin Suzanne.
He loved being a Marine and progressed steadily through the ranks and was promoted to Lt. Colonel in 1977. He retired from the USMC in 1979 and that same year began working for the Gwinnet County School System. He began as a purchasing agent and progressed all the way to Assistant Superintendent of Education for Supply Management and Transportation. After 20 years of exemplary service he retired from the school system in 1999.
In 2004 Bob and Kathleen returned to Tunica for his retirement. Not one to rest easy and putter around, he ran for, and was elected as a town Alderman, serving for one term. He was a member of the Lion's Club, the American Legion, the Tunica Museum Board, the Tunica Literacy Council, the Tunica County Airport Commission and served on the North Delta Planning and Development Board. He was a long time member of the Tunica United Methodist Church where he served as Chairman of the Trustees for many years.
Bob was preceded in death by his father in 1968, his sister, Eileen, in 1997 and his mother in 1999. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Kathleen, his daughters, Mary E. Gann-Downum of Bella Vista, AR, and Kristin McLaughlin (David) of Hoover, AL, three grandchildren, Tyler Morgan (Jessica) of Gulf Shores, AL, Ashtin Tschirhart (Phil) of Bella Vista, AR and Gannon McLaughlin of Hoover, AL, two great-grandsons, Cale and Baze Morgan of Gulf Shores, AL, and a great-granddaughter, Charlie Tschirhart of Bella Vista, AR.
The family will receive visitors from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm on Wednesday, October 24, 2018, at the Tunica United Methodist Church, 1043 School Street, Tunica, MS, with the funeral service following at 1:00 pm. Graveside services will immediately follow at Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would request that donations be made to The Salvation Army or the Tunica Humane Society.
