Benjamin McDonald Matthews, Jr
Ben Matthews was born 3/7/1934 to John E Matthews and Helen Little Matthews in Money, MS.
Mr. Ben is survived by his sons,
Benjamin M Matthews III and wife Colette of Tumbling Shoals, AR, John Matthews and wife Andrea of Sarasota, FL and Hayne Matthews of Tunica. Grandchildren Baron Matthews and wife Kacey of Madison, MS, Suzette Matthews and husband Matty Bengloff of Cleveland, MS, Mary Darby Jackson and husband Clark Jackson of Ridgeland, MS, and Grace Matthews of Oxford, MS. Great grandchildren Benjamin Marshall Matthews, Charlotte Colette Matthews, and Charlie Baron Matthews.
One brother Joe Matthews and wife Helen of Rock Hill, SC. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Lunsford Hayne Darby Matthews. By his parents, his sister Mary Don Koonce and brother John E Matthews both of Tunica. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends.
Mr. Ben lived in Tunica for most of childhood and adult life. He graduated from Tunica High School and Ole Miss in Oxford, MS.
He enlisted in the army during the Korean War and served in the 101st Airborne. Ben Matthews met the love of his life Mary Lunsford Hayne Darby in Columbia, SC and they were married in 1956.
He spent most of life in the agriculture industry sales with tractors being his love. Mr. Ben was an avid hunter and fisherman and member and an honorary member of Blytheville Hunting Club.
He was most proud of his family and being sober since 1986. He was a proud member and mentor of Alcoholics Anonymous and spent the last 34 years attending meetings and sponsoring others.
Ben was a member of the The Church of The Epiphany Episcopal Church in Tunica, MS for most of his life and loved volunteering there and later in life enjoying the membership and activities of the church.
Mr. Ben spent the last 8 months in the Oxford VA home where he was loved and cared for by the "BWing".
Funeral service are Friday, August 10, 2018 at The Church of The Epiphany at 1:00pm. Visitation will follow at the Church after committal service.
