Obituary of Robert Barnard
ROBERT BROWNING BARNARD, SR
Robert Browning Barnard, Sr, 92, completed his earthly journey May 8, 2017 at Flowers Manor in Clarksdale. He was born March 5, 1925 to Grandy Bernard Barnard and Beatrice Driskell Barnard in Claremont, Mississippi.
He graduated from Clarksdale High School and continued his education at Millsap College. He enlisted in the V-5 program for recruits to train as Naval Aviators and finished his pre-flight training at the University of Iowa where he got his wings. While serving in the Navy, Robert flew F4-U Corsairs from four different air craft carriers and completed his service in the Naval Reserve at Millington, Tennessee.
Robert was an officer with the Bank of Clarksdale, United Southern Bank and retired at Regions Bank. He served as a director with Region One Mental Health and was one of the founding members of Youth, Inc. He was an active blood donor for many years, a member of the American Legion and the VFW. While a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, Robert served in numerous positions including Sunday School Teacher for the Character Builders Class and Finance Chairman. He also served for many years with the Coahoma County Heart Fund.
Robert was a scratch golfer and won several cups as a member of the Clarksdale Country Club. He enjoyed cooking, grilling, woodworking and sharing all these talents with others.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, G B and John Barnard, one sister, Bettye Barnard Kennedy, and one great grandchild, Charles Cohen Pearson.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jo Ann Jennings Barnard, one brother, Dr William Winston Barnard (Dorothy), six children, Robert Browning Barnard, Jr (Cristen), Beverly Barnard Roberson (John Ray), John William "Jay" Barnard (Rita Johnson), James Jennings "Jim" Barnard, Virginia "Ginnie" Barnard Hansen (Bubba), Betsy Barnard Reitz (Mike Stoker), 18 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial Service will be held May 15, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Clarksdale. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am and the service will follow at 11:30 am.
