Obituary of Elizabeth Ellis
Elizabeth Wilson (Betty) Ellis passed away on March 29, 2017 following a lengthy illness. She was 88 . Services will be held at St. Georges Episcopal Church on March 31, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Jason Shelby officiating. Private burial service will be held at 9:00a.m. with open visitation at 10-11a.m. Meredith-Nowell Funeral Home has charge.
Mrs. Ellis was born May 25, 1928 in Clarksdale to Mr. and Mrs. William Yerger Wilson. She graduated from Clarksdale High in 1945 and attended MSCW earning a degree in Music Education and taught music at St. Georges Day School for 20 years. She earned a Masters in English and taught at Lee Academy for 18 years, and was selected Star Teacher 7 years. Mrs. Ellis touched the lives of many students, earning a reputation of very tough but very fair.
She was a life-long member of St. George's Episcopal Church and served many years on the ECW, alter guild, and a Sunday school teacher. Mrs. Ellis was the loving mother of 3 and a wonderful friend to all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Ellis is preceded in death by her sister, Harriet Wilson Garrett (1991), a daughter , Jennie Ellis Black (2010), and her beloved Dachshund "Scout" (2008).
She leaves 2 sons; Marshall Stone Ellis, Jr. of Hattiesburg, Lucien Wilson Ellis of Lyon,2 grandchildren; Sarah Black of Lafayette, LA and Alexandra Ellis of Biloxi.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mississippi Children's Home Services in Jackson, St. Georges Episcopal Church or the Animal Shelter.
