Carroll L. Bruister, Jr.

Tutwiler, MS

Carroll L. Bruister, Jr., 89, a devoted husband, father and friend, retired rural Mail Carrier, died February 13, 2017 at his home. Visitation is Thursday February 16, 2017, 1:00 - 2:00 P.M. at First Baptist Church in Tutwiler, MS. Funeral services are 2:00 P.M. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Tutwiler, MS with burial in the Rosemound Cemetery. Meredith-Nowell Funeral Home in Clarksdale, MS is handling the arrangements.

Mr. Bruister was in the U.S. Navy serving in World War II. He was on the ship SS Albemarle on the way to Europe. When the war was over, he went to the Philippines and drove a fuel truck for a few years before returning home. He was a lifetime member of the MS Craftsmans Guild, serving on the board receiving Emeritus Status, truly a Master Craftsman. He graduated high school in 1944, became an Eagle Scout and entered the U.S. Navy all in the same year. He attended Moorhead and MSU. He was a past president of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, rural Mail Carrier for 31 years and Scout Master when Cally was a Scout. He was known as the "Leather Man" and the saddle king of the Delta. He went to the World Fair in 1986 in New Orleans, LA to perform his craft of making saddles, western tac and ornamental boxes which he sold worldwide. He was a lifelong American Legionnaire, member of First Baptist Church in Tutwiler, MS serving as a Deacon and an avid reader.

Survivors include son Carroll L. "Cally" Bruister III (Debbie) of Ackerman, MS; daughter Melanie Bruister Taylor of Ackerman, MS; sister Betty Leslie (Paul) of Shreveport, LA and grandchildren Shelley Gammill (Shae) of Ackerman, MS, Keryn Page (Brandon) of Starkville, MS, Sebe Pettit of Baton Rouge, LA and great grandchildren Rhiannon Page, Macey Gammill, Bella Page, Micah Gammill, Calla Gammill, Larson Gammill and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Janie Crow Bruister, parents Carroll L. Bruister, Sr. and Wilda "Bit" Rice Bruister and granddaughter Lauren Bruister.
