Jewel Evelyn Snipes Crowson passed away on Monday, March 12, 2018 in Memphis, Tennessee. A family burial will be Saturday, March 17, in Clarksdale, MS with visitation at 2:00 at Meredith Nowell Funeral Home, 314 E. 2nd St., Clarksdale, MS A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 18, at 2:00 at Kirby Pines Chapel, 3535 Kirby Rd., Memphis, TN. Jewel was born in Buies Creek, North, Carolina, in 1932. She met and married William N. Crowson, MD while in nursing school in Nashville, Tennessee. They lived in Clarksdale, Mississippi, before moving to Memphis in 1970. She was the receptionist at Christ United Methodist Church for 30 years. She made many friends with her warm, welcoming voice and presence at the front desk. She was a very active member in the church, involved in numerous programs, groups and classes. She started the altar and funeral guilds at the church and coordinated memorials. Jewel was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Memphis Salvation Army. She was a past president of the UT Faculty Wives Club and former state officer of The Kings Daughters and Sons of Mississippi. Jewel enjoyed bridge, reading, needle work and playing and teaching mah-jongg. More than anything she will be remembered as gracious, caring and giving to all those she knew and met.
Jewel is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill Crowson, and by her parents and two siblings. She is survived by her sister Debi and husband Jon Miller of Nashville, TN. She will be forever loved and missed by daughter Cindy Pierce and husband George of Bellaire, TX, by son Nat Crowson and wife Susan of Olive Branch, MS, by son Chris Crowson and wife Susan of Hockley, TX, by daughter Beth Lynn and husband Billy of Nashville, TN, and by the families of her eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Christ United Methodist Church, Permanent Endowment Fund, 4488 Poplar Av., Memphis, TN, 38117.
