Kenneth Morgan Murphree

Kenneth Morgan Murphree, 71, died peacefully surrounded by his family Monday afternoon, August 7. Kenny, Ken, Uncle Kenny, Murph, Urbanek, Dad, Grandad was a very good man. He had a servant's heart.

He was born to Hazel Coleman and Buford Murphree on March 31, 1946. He was the second of three children. He grew up in Tunica, Mississippi.

He started working at his Dad's grocery store at a very young age. He attended Tunica County High School, making friends that would remain his best friends until the end. He then graduated from the University of Mississippi where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.

When called upon to serve his country, Kenny dutifully did so, serving two years' active duty with a tour in Vietnam. After his service, he returned to Tunica where he worked with friends and reconnected with one of his younger sister's friends, Connie Monteith. Kenny and Connie fell in love and married soon after, living in Oxford while Kenny finished his Masters degree in Urban and Regional Planning. After graduating from Ole Miss, Kenny and Connie moved to Hernando. There, Kenny worked diligently and eventually was selected as its county administrator for the next twenty-two years. During his tenure as county administrator, DeSoto County experienced its greatest growth. He helmed many projects during his time there. In 1996, Kenny became the county administrator for Tunica County. Again, he was able to contribute his experience and expertise to a growing county.

He was president of the I-69 Coalition and was on the Board of Directors of First Security Bank. He was a former president of the Delta Council and past president of Northwest Community College Foundation Board of Trustees. Kenny retired from Tunica County in 2012, and he has spent his time in his beloved Tunica and his home in Hardy, Arkansas. He had a grand life. He was a friend to all.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Coleman. He leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Connie Monteith Murphree, a sister, Melanee Lucado (Tommy), a son, Andrew, and two grandchildren Carter and Nicolas.
